Entrepreneurs’ praise for the StartUp Lounge

Gazelle entrepreneurs Priya Lakhani, founder of Masala Masala and SOCO, and Ben Ramsden, founder of Pants to Poverty, were full of praise for the StartUp Lounge after experiencing City College Norwich’s inspiring new facility for developing students’ entrepreneurial skills.

Speaking at the official launch of the StartUp Lounge on Friday 3rd February, Ms Lakhani, who left behind a career in law to become an entrepreneur and set up fresh Indian sauce company Masala Masala, said:

“I am actually quite overwhelmed at this whole space, I was not expecting this at all, I think it’s absolutely incredible.”

“If you have an idea already, if you have a venture that you want to pursue, this is an ideal space to come to, to come and develop that idea.”

Ms Lakhani added that the StartUp Lounge also has plenty to offer career-minded students who want to stand out and succeed as employees:

“In this day and age and in this current climate your employer, generally an entrepreneur, will be looking for something else in you, they’ll be looking for employees with an edge. That edge might be whether they’re looking for somebody who is more creative, more innovative, who is more proactive and who can think outside the box. Those qualities are what I call an entrepreneurial mind-set.”

Fellow Gazelle entrepreneur, Ben Ramsden, founder of Pants to Poverty, one of the leading ethical and sustainable fashion brands, said:

“To be an entrepreneur gives you a lot of freedom and it helps you to look at the world in a totally different way, and the more that young people can get involved in this type of thing the better.”

Mr Ramsden highlighted the need for entrepreneurial skills in a global economy, saying “The world has changed and places like this help us change with it.”

Mr Ramsden said that it was an “incredible honour” to be asked to be a Gazelle entrepreneur, and concluded by saying: “This is just the beginning, there’s an entrepreneurial evolution that’s starting to happen and I’m delighted to be part of it.”

Dick Palmer, Principal, City College Norwich, stressed the hand-on nature of the experience that students will gain through the StartUp Lounge:

“We want the StartUp Lounge to be an inspirational place for our students, a place where they really can do different. And I do mean “do”. This is not a space to read about enterprise. We’re not going to be doing MBAs in entrepreneurial thinking. It’s a space to create enterprise, an experiential space for our students to actually experience what’s involved in starting up a business.”

“Next year we want all of our 14,000 students to access the StartUp Lounge and we’ve already had almost a thousand come through since we opened in the first week of January, and we’ve got six fantastic business ideas from our students that we’re already working on.”

Gazelle is an exciting new movement in further education, bringing together leaders from the private and public sectors with the ambition of transforming the sector through entrepreneurship. Gazelle is working with some of Britain’s most inspirational entrepreneurs to ensure that students are equipped with an ambitious, can-do attitude and prepared for success in employment in today’s economic climate.

Gazelle has been created by Generator Enterprises, a company founded by five college principals, including Dick Palmer, Principal and CEO of City College Norwich and Chairman of Generator Enterprises. Generator Enterprises is working on a blueprint for an Entrepreneurial College of which the StartUp Lounge will form a key part.

Students and entrepreneurs celebrate StartUp Lounge opening

The StartUp Lounge, City College Norwich’s ground-breaking new facility for teaching enterprise and entrepreneurship skills, was officially opened with a day-long celebration of student enterprise on Friday 3rd February.

Gazelle entrepreneurs Priya Lakhani, founder of Masala Masala and SOCO, and Ben Ramsden, founder of Pants to Poverty, alongside City College Norwich Principal Dick Palmer, joined over 100 students from City College Norwich and partner schools and colleges in a hive of enterprising activity that brought a buzz of excitement to the StartUp Lounge.

The main reception area of the College was transformed into a vibrant market throughout the day, showcasing existing enterprises within the College, from media production companies Interim Records and the Media Mob, to clothes retailer ego, fashion label Cocoon, to the Crystal Clean car valeting service and sales of hair and beauty treatments, flowers and cakes.

After taking in the market, the invited guests had the opportunity to tour the StartUp Lounge which takes students through a series of stages in a business start-up “journey”, from developing their concept in the Ideation area, to market research and business planning, finding and working with partners in the Collaboratorium, to honing their pitching and presentation skills.

The highly interactive spaces within the StartUp Lounge feature some of the latest digital technology, including a Dragons’ Den-style pitching room with two-way video recording, enabling students to not only review their presentation skills but also to play back the reactions of their audience during their pitch.

Around 60 invited business leaders and entrepreneurs were given credit cards to spend virtual cash on products and services that have been developed in recent weeks by teams of students from City College Norwich, Gateshead College and North Hertfordshire College, as part of the Market Maker competition.

The top three teams then pitched their businesses to “dragons” Priya Lakhani, Ben Ramsden and City College Norwich Principal Dick Palmer in The Studio, watched by a larger audience on the Intereaction big screen.

A closely fought competition was won by Barking Mad, a group of students from Gateshead College, whose Wagg Bag for pet owners to carry their dog’s accessories in style, captured the judges’ imaginations and also impressed with the business acumen of the students.

Local high school students from City Academy Norwich, Aylsham High School and Wayland Community High School also joined in on the act, taking part in a schools’ enterprise competition over 2 days, supported by national young entrepreneurs Jamie Dunn, Kieran Miles and Carly Ward acting as mentors.

Students from Wayland Community High School won the competition with their idea for an Entrepreneurs’ Club in schools, with enterprise activities funded through sales of their eco-friendly lunch-in-a-cup product and events such as eco fashion shows.

Dick Palmer, Principal, City College Norwich and Chairman of Generator Enterprises said: “The StartUp Lounge and the work of our partner College Principals in Gazelle is about transforming further education and helping to create the start-up businesses needed for future growth. Our students are already making fantastic use of the StartUp Lounge and from September we will be making these opportunities an entitlement for all of our 14,000 students.”

Gazelle Entrepreneur, Ben Ramsden, Founder, Pants to Poverty said: “I really wanted to come and see the launch of the StartUp Lounge and find out how the students are using this exciting space. For young people starting their careers in today's economy it is more important than ever to encourage and inspire them to start their own businesses and get experience whilst at college, and the StartUp Lounge will be instrumental in helping young people achieve their dreams.

“As a Gazelle Entrepreneur I am committed to helping Gazelle Principals use entrepreneurship to change the further education sector and to get more people not just taking jobs but making jobs. It's thrilling to be involved with fellow Gazelles and to put this into action.”

Gazelle Entrepreneur, Priya Lakhani, Founder, Masala Masala and SOCO said: “The education system we currently have is built to push young people down the traditional route of employment which isn't suitable for everyone. Young people today have the talent and creativity required to start their own business, and we need to do more to encourage them to dream big.”

“Students at City College Norwich have a fantastic space to inspire them to fulfil their entrepreneurial dreams. I feel privileged to be here today to launch this space and meet a new generation of aspirant entrepreneurs.”

Gazelle, an exciting new movement in further education, brings together leaders from the private and public sectors with the ambition of transforming the sector through entrepreneurship.

Gazelle has been created by Generator Enterprises, a company founded by five college principals, including Dick Palmer, Principal and CEO of City College Norwich and Chairman of Generator Enterprises. The other colleges are Gateshead College, New College Nottingham, North Hertfordshire College and Warwickshire College.

Gazelle is working with some of Britain’s most inspirational entrepreneurs to ensure that students are equipped with an ambitious, can-do attitude and prepared for success in employment in today’s economic climate.
Generator Enterprises is working on a blueprint for an Entrepreneurial College of which the StartUp Lounge will form a key part. Many of the features of the blueprint have been inspired by the work of Babson College, the leading American college for entrepreneurship, and the Kauffman Foundation of Entrepreneurship.

Local businesses and entrepreneurs will play a key role in the StartUp Lounge, sharing their expertise with students, mentoring those starting up their own enterprises, providing practical business advice and support, as well as spotting new business talent and potential investment opportunities.

In addition to the core focus on entrepreneurship, the StartUp Lounge will also focus on students’ employability skills and developing intrapreneurs – graduates who add value to organisations through their creativity and ability to see an initial idea through to a finished product or service.

Students’ 2-day takeover of Holiday Inn hotel

Eighty hospitality and catering students from City College Norwich rose to the challenge of running a busy hotel this week, covering all of the roles, including General Manager, as part of the annual “hotel takeover” of the Holiday Inn Norwich-North.

Over Tuesday 31st January and Wednesday 1st February, the students performed all of the key roles and responsibilities associated with running one of Norwich’s largest 4 star hotels, from reception duties to housekeeping, bar management, and food preparation and service.

Students also shadowed the hotel’s management team, including General Manager Devin Grosse, to gain an insight into what it is like to manage and supervise all of the hotel’s operations.

Hospitality student Emma Seaman, 17, who shadowed General Manager, Devin Grosse, said: "Coming in and seeing the operation of a busy hotel is very beneficial as you get to gain an insight into the industry and get to see all the different roles that are going on behind the scenes. The experience from today has really shown me what a career in the hospitality industry has to hold and I am looking forward to seeing what the future brings."

Hotel Reception Programme student, Sarah Rope, 16, said: “Today has been a fun and different experience that has really opened my eyes to all of the different things that working on a hotel reception desk involves. This has definitely given me the opportunity to gain the vital work experience that my future employers will look for.”

Devin Grosse, General Manager of the Holiday Inn Norwich North, said: “It’s great. I’ve been chatting with a couple of the students and it’s so useful to them to see everything they have learned in theory being put into practice. That’s why the link between City College and us is so useful. It gives them a good insight into the industry but also lets them see all the different roles available.”

The hotel takeover culminated in a charity dinner and auction in the Lancaster Suite on Wednesday evening, when students catered for over 150 guests. The dinner was held to raise money for Hospitality Action and the College’s Student New Opportunities Fund. Over £1,700 was raised from the auction alone.

The event was also use to highlight careers in hospitality, with staff from the hotel and from the College offering visitors information and advice on the careers available and the training required to get into this stimulating, rewarding customer-focused industry.

Steve Thorpe, Head of the Hotel, Hair and Beauty School at City College Norwich, said: “The Hotel School at City College Norwich enjoys very strong links with employers and it is a testimony to the strength of this relationship that the management of the Holiday Inn Norwich-North are willing to hand over their hotel to our students to run for two days. As well as giving invaluable work experience to our students, we want to use the event to highlight the many exciting career opportunities available within hospitality and catering, and also to raise money for two really worthwhile causes.”

A group of Musical Theatre students were given a singing and acting master class this week when Olivier award-winning actor David Thaxton and fellow West End actor Nancy Sullivan visited City College Norwich.

The students had the opportunity to prepare audition pieces and gain vital direction from the two actors, who were impressed with the work the students had done throughout the day. Their audition pieces will help them to progress on to drama school, university or start their careers in the arts.

Nancy Sullivan said: “The students have been really great and there has been a good vibe all day. They are very committed and very talented.”

Laura Hodges, lecturer in the School of Creative and Business Industries said: “Nancy and David gave the students an invaluable insight into how the industry works. That, combined with their obvious skill and passion about their subjects, made for an amazing workshop.”
MP impressed by visit to MINT

Chloe Smith MP for Norwich North this week visited MINT, the College's employment service for 16-25 year olds who face barriers to employment, where she found out more about the service and met a group of young job seekers.

The local MP, who is also Economic Secretary to the Treasury, visited MINT's office in The Forum in Norwich, and its nearby training suite, where she spoke to some of the young people the service is currently working with and the job coaches who are helping them into jobs.

Following the visit, Ms Smith (@ChloeSmithMP) tweeted: “Just been blown away by the determination of young people with learning difficulties to get jobs, helped by Norwich City College's MINT.”

MINT works with 16-25 year olds who face barriers to employment, such as having a learning difficulty or disability, working with employers to find suitable job openings and then, crucially, continuing to work with the young person to help train and support them in their new job.

MINT does this through its job coaches who spend up to 8 weeks alongside the young person in the workplace, breaking the components of the job down into clear, manageable steps for them to master, following a technique called Training in Systematic Instruction.

The approach has proven highly effective, with MINT successfully placing 37 young people into employment in a little over a year. MINT is now working with over 60 employers and has 81 young people on its books.

One of those who has been supported by MINT is Hannah Tacey, 20, from Thetford, who has recently been offered a job to work in a nursing home as a domestic assistant. Hannah said:

“MINT has helped me get more confident by encouraging me to talk with more people and other people on the course. My job coach got me an interview and helped during the interview and I was offered the job.”

Shaun Greengrass, 19, from Wymondham, was supported into employment through MINT and is now working as a retail assistant at Myhills Pet & Garden in Wymondham. Shaun said:

“My job coach contacted an employer and secured me an interview. The work placement eased me into the world of work. Having support on hand made it easier. There was an immense amount of support emotionally. Knowing someone was there for me, on my side, really helped.”

Dick Palmer, Principal, City College Norwich, said: “With the right training and support the young people MINT works with can make a successful transition into work. Thanks to the support of employers and the work of the job coaches, MINT is changing lives by opening up meaningful job opportunities for these young people.”

Lee Robinson, MINT Project Manager, said: “We have had a great response from employers, who have seen that the service can help them to fill their vacancies with hard working, capable young people, who just need that extra bit of support that MINT is able to provide. We are always looking for new employers to work with and we are aiming to help even more young people into jobs in 2012.”

Anyone who would like to find out more about MINT’s service for employers and for young people facing barriers to employment can call the team on (01603) 773 760 or email mintenquiries@ccn.ac.uk.

Hospitality Professional Cookery Advanced Apprentice

Contemporary Jewellery Making: Evening course starting February

Jewellery making does not need to be restricted to precious metals; items can be made from a variety of media to create your own individual designs. Step by step guidance will show you how to use a variety of resources and materials, to produce one-off creative pieces of jewellery.

This is a ‘hands on’ course, conducted in a relaxed and informal environment.

At the end of the course, students will have experimented with basic metalwork techniques including soldering, piercing and filing, as well as explored a range of other media and materials including paper, textiles and casting techniques to create jewellery.

The aim of the course is to familiarise students with each method, enabling them to continue at home if they wish - students may even have the opportunity to sell their Contemporary Jewellery at the college retail outlet Ego, in Chapelfield Shopping Mall, Norwich

The course is suitable for both the beginner and those who have already had some craft experience and is designed for those over 16 years of age.

The course starts on the first of February 2012 and runs for seven weeks between 6.30pm and 8.30pm - there are no entry requirements, you just need to be keen to create unique pieces of contemporary jewellery ... and there's no tests and no exams - just come along, join in and let your creativity flow.

Course fees: £40 for the complete course.

Esme makes Spanish food competition final

Professional Cookery student Esme Broadbent, who works in the Swan House Restaurant in Beccles, has gained a place in the final of the Foods from Spain Spanish Young Chef of the Year competition.

The City College Norwich student from Ditchingham has been shortlisted with seven other finalists for the national competition which celebrates Spanish cuisine in the UK.

The 20-year-old has recently become a full-time trainee sous chef under the watchful eye of head chef Oakley Leighwood, whilst attending college for one day a week.

Miss Broadbent, who only found out about the competition two weeks before the deadline, said:

“I thought I would give it a go but I didn’t expect to hear anything back. I was delighted when I received a phone call telling me they had some good news for me. I am learning to speak Spanish and would also like to go to Spain, so this spurred me on to take part.”

The competition was first launched to inspire young chefs to explore and experiment with a variety of seasonal Spanish fresh produce and create memorable dishes which reflect the food of Spain. The competition also aims to promote Spanish produce.

All finalists go through to a final cook-off round in London on January 21st, where they will be tested on their food knowledge and will have to prepare a three course meal. The competition winner will take up a sought-after work placement in the kitchens of the Spanish Michelin-starred restaurant, Akelare.

Looking ahead to the final, Miss Broadbent said: “Although the competition will be fierce I am very much looking forward to the event and am getting myself organised to be able to prepare my menu.”

Sports therapy students take their skills to the Continent

Trainee sports therapists from City College Norwich will practise their skills even further afield in 2012, thanks to the acquisition of new 7.5 tonne truck which will transport the College’s Extreme Sports Therapy Unit to events as far away as Spain.

The impressive new Renault truck, which is fully liveried in the Extreme Sports Therapy Unit’s colours, will enable the Level 3 Diploma in the Prevention and Management of Sports Injuries students to take their equipment to new events at home and abroad.

The Extreme Sports Therapy Unit already has a well-established presence at mountain biking events in the region, offering pre- and post-race sports massage to hundreds of local athletes.

The Unit was set up in 2007 to give students the opportunity to develop their skills and gain valuable work experience by attending a variety of sporting events. Since it was first established, the Unit has developed considerably and has outgrown its original two trailers.

With the new truck able to transport all of the Unit’s marquees, camping gear and sports therapy equipment, the team will now be attending high profile cycling and other sporting events outside England in 2012.

Events the students will be attending this year include the Slate Man triathlon in Wales, the Snowdonia Sportive and the Quebrantuhuesos Sportive, Sabiñánigo, in northern Spain, as well as a number of national events for Chain Reaction Cycles and local competitions organised by Thetford MTB Racing.

Providing sports massage at these events to a range of athletes, from professionals to amateurs, will help to develop the students’ practical ability, communication skills and confidence, which are all fundamental qualities for working in the sports industry.

The truck’s attractive livery was designed by City College Norwich Multimedia Developer Tracey Tutt, and was wrapped by former student Paul Dyball at Unique Signs and Graphics.

Brett Stanforth, 18, from Cromer, a student on the Level 3 Diploma in the Prevention and Management of Sport Injuries, said:

“I went to the Thetford Dusk ‘til Dawn event in October, which was a really enjoyable experience, but it was a bit of a struggle with our old trailer. Having the truck will make things a lot easier for us. It will also give the Extreme Sports Therapy Unit a really professional image and make us stand out to competitors and other businesses at the events we go to.”

Dick Palmer, Principal, City College Norwich, said:

“The Extreme Sports Therapy Unit enables our students to develop their skills as part of a real enterprise that attends sporting events year-round. The arrival of this fantastic new vehicle further extends the opportunities for the students to gain experience within the industry in which they want to work.”

To find out more about the Extreme Sports Therapy Unit, including sponsorship opportunities, please contact Phil Sayers on phil.sayers@ccn.ac.uk or visit www.ccnxsports.co.uk.

Students given tips on entrepreneurial success

Business with Enterprise students at City College Norwich picked up some top tips on how to succeed as entrepreneurs this week when they had the chance to quiz award-winning young entrepreneur Junior Ogunyemi.

The author of the recently published How to be a student entrepreneur visited St Andrews House where he met the students and talked to them about the factors behind his own successful enterprises, which have included starting up a football coaching academy and a publishing business.

Mr Ogunyemi, himself still only 22, shared with the students the lessons he has learned through his entrepreneurial successes, as well as highlighting some of the pitfalls to avoid. Students also had the chance to put their own questions to the young entrepreneur in a Q&A session.

In a highly engaging presentation, Mr Ogunyemi left the students in no doubt that they will have to work hard and overcome hurdles along the way, but he also energised and inspired with his advice and strategies for how to turn a business or social enterprise idea into a successful start-up.

He also told the group that there was no better time than now, whilst still students, to take their first steps as entrepreneurs: “You don’t have so much to lose. If you’re going to take a risk, do it now.”

Mr Ogunyemi added: “I think everyone can learn to be an entrepreneur, I don’t think being an entrepreneur’s a born thing, everyone can actually learn entrepreneurial skills. It’s just about being more self-sustainable in the end. I think it’s a skill that everyone should learn, even if your passion isn’t about entrepreneurship, it’s something that everyone can benefit from.”

Business with Enterprise student Daniel Lilley said: “It was a really constructive talk. I learnt a lot of things that will personally help me really, like how to make the best use of my time.”
